Result<\/strong><\/p>\n

When eating out, in a taxi, at the hairdresser or even in many toilets - tipping is a matter of course for most Germans. But how much do people consider appropriate when paying the bill for a dinner worth 50 euros? On average, 4.50 euros is considered appropriate. In 2014, it was still 3.50 euros or, to put it another way, 22 per cent less. This is pretty much in line with inflation over the last decade. However, there are also different ideas within the population: One in six would give between 1-2 euros, two thirds see 3-5 euros as suitable, and one in ten tend to leave more than five euros in tips.<\/p>\n

Reasons<\/strong><\/p>\n

There are many reasons for tipping, ranging from politeness to recognising good service. A tip is also often a form of appreciation for the service, the good food and a small reward for special kindness or efficiency. Some also want to show their generosity or simply say thank you for good hospitality. The social aspect also plays a role: tipping is seen as polite and fosters the hope of leaving a positive impression in order to receive (even) better service on future visits.<\/p>\n

Forecast<\/strong><\/p>\n

In view of increasing digitalisation and the spread of cashless payment methods, which often suggest predefined tip amounts in various increments on the display, tipping will become more natural in the future. The automated suggestions lead to many customers choosing the middle amount as they feel pressurised by observing other guests or employees (so-called \u201eguilt-tipping\u201c). At the same time, the current expansion of tipping requirements to new areas such as self-service shops or the piggy bank in doctors\u201e surgeries, hotel receptions and libraries is also leading to so-called \u201ctip fatigue\" among some members of the public, where they deliberately tip less or not at all. At the same time, the discussion about fairer pay for employees will increase, which could lead to a reduction in tipping practices in the long term.<\/p>\n
