This reveals a blatant discrepancy between the perception of others and the assessment of oneself. <\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"3,10\"><span class=\"citation-27\">While trust in public initiatives is declining, parallel data shows that 90 percent of respondents take personal responsibility for their actions.<\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"3,12\">. <\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"3,14\"><span class=\"citation-26\">More than half are even convinced that they bear more responsibility than their fellow human beings.<\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"3,16\">. <\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"3,18\"><span class=\"citation-25\">The self-image (\u201eI do a lot\u201c) thus stands in stark contrast to the external image (\u201eThe others do little\u201c)<\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"3,20\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"source-inline-chip-container ng-star-inserted\"><\/div>\n<h2 data-path-to-node=\"4\"><span data-path-to-node=\"4,0\"><b>Reasons<\/b> <\/span><\/h2>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"4\"><span data-path-to-node=\"4,0\">The primary cause of this perception gap is a psychological distortion. <\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"4,2\"><span class=\"citation-24\">People tend to evaluate their own behavior more favorably and positively than the actions of others.<\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"4,4\">. <\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"4,6\"><span class=\"citation-23\">One&#039;s own commitment is evident, while the activities of others often remain invisible or are perceived as insufficient.<\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"4,8\">. This effect is amplified by evolutionary and media mechanisms. <\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"4,10\"><span class=\"citation-22\">The human brain is programmed to perceive risks, problems, and negative events more intensely, as this was historically vital for survival.<\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"4,12\">. <\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"4,14\"><span class=\"citation-21\">In today&#039;s media landscape, this leads to grievances and scandals being discussed more frequently than positive examples of civic engagement.<\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"4,16\">. <\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"4,18\"><span class=\"citation-20\">When the focus is primarily on negative headlines, the impression is reinforced that there is a widespread lack of civic spirit and responsibility, even if the reality is more nuanced.<\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"4,20\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"source-inline-chip-container ng-star-inserted\"><\/div>\n<h2 data-path-to-node=\"5\"><span data-path-to-node=\"5,0\"><b>Forecast<\/b> <\/span><\/h2>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"5\"><span data-path-to-node=\"5,2\"><span class=\"citation-19\">To break the negative cycle of mistrust and calls for state solutions, a change of perspective will be necessary in the future.<\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"5,4\">. <\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"5,6\"><span class=\"citation-18\">Trust in society&#039;s ability to act grows not through appeals, but through lived reality and visibility.<\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"5,8\">. <\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"5,10\"><span class=\"citation-17\">It can be assumed that shared experiences and encounters \u2013 for example in voluntary work, in clubs or in the neighborhood \u2013 will gain in importance in order to correct the image of the \u201einactive other\u201c.<\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"5,12\">. <\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"5,14\"><span class=\"citation-16\">When successes are shared and personal initiative is experienced as rewarding and effective, the individual&#039;s motivation to see themselves as part of a responsible community increases.<\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"5,16\">. <\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"5,18\"><span class=\"citation-15\">The challenge of the coming years will be to bring these positive narratives more to the forefront in order to close the gap between perception and reality.<\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"5,20\">.<\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>German citizens are increasingly skeptical of their willingness to take civic initiative.
