data-path-to-node=\"1\"><span data-path-to-node=\"1,0\">Caring for relatives is increasingly becoming a fixed pillar in the everyday lives of many German citizens. <\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"1,2\"><span class=\"citation-15\">Currently, more than one in eight citizens (13 %) state that they care for a relative at least once a week.<\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"1,4\">. <\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"1,6\"><span class=\"citation-14\">If one considers the monthly cycle, almost one in five citizens is involved.<\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"1,8\">. <\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"1,10\"><span class=\"citation-13\">In comparison to 2010, there is a clear increase in private care work, which at that time was performed by 15 % (monthly) or 11 % (weekly).<\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"1,12\">. <\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"1,14\"><span class=\"citation-12\">Caregiving remains unequally distributed: women are significantly more involved in caring for relatives (22 %) than men (16 %).<\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"1,16\">. <\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"1,18\"><span class=\"citation-11\">Although men are slowly catching up compared to previous years, the main burden still falls on female citizens.<\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"1,20\">. <\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"1,22\"><span class=\"citation-10\">Furthermore, regional differences are evident: In rural areas, care is provided more frequently than in large cities, which is due to closer family structures, but also to a lower density of professional services.<\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"1,24\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"source-inline-chip-container ng-star-inserted\"><\/div>\n<h2 data-path-to-node=\"2\"><span data-path-to-node=\"2,0\"><b>Reasons<\/b> <\/span><\/h2>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"2\"><span data-path-to-node=\"2,0\">The increase in home care is primarily due to demographic change. <\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"2,2\"><span class=\"citation-9\">In an aging society with a growing number of very elderly people, the risk of chronic diseases increases, while at the same time there is a shortage of skilled workers.<\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"2,4\">. <\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"2,6\"><span class=\"citation-8\">This leads to a de facto privatization of care: families step in where state or institutional structures are insufficient.<\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"2,8\">. <\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"2,10\"><span class=\"citation-7\">The fact that women more frequently take on this task is often still due to traditional gender roles.<\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"2,12\">. At the same time, private care is an enormous economic factor. <\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"2,14\"><span class=\"citation-6\">If the unpaid work of family caregivers, who account for two-thirds of all care services, were monetized, this would correspond to a value of over 40 billion euros \u2013 comparable to half of the federal budget for education and research.<\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"2,16\">. <\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"2,18\"><span class=\"citation-5\">In rural areas, family support is often the only option, as professional service providers are lacking.<\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"2,20\">. <\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"2,22\"><span class=\"citation-4\">The burden on caregivers is high: The average sick leave rate in nursing professions is almost twice as high as the national average, at 39 days, highlighting the physical and psychological challenges of this work.<\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"2,24\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"source-inline-chip-container ng-star-inserted\"><\/div>\n<h2 data-path-to-node=\"3\"><span data-path-to-node=\"3,0\"><b>Forecast<\/b> <\/span><\/h2>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"3\"><span data-path-to-node=\"3,0\">Care will continue to be a central societal task in the future, but it requires new approaches to solutions. <\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"3,2\"><span class=\"citation-3\">Similar to childcare, demands for tax advantages, wage replacement benefits, or the crediting of pension points for caregiving periods will gain in relevance.<\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"3,4\">. <\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"3,6\"><span class=\"citation-2\">It can be assumed that flexible working time models and company solutions will be crucial in reconciling work and care work.<\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"3,8\">. <\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"3,10\"><span class=\"citation-1\">In addition to family support, the importance of foreign skilled workers will continue to increase; their share in elderly care has already more than doubled since 2013 to 18 %<\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"3,12\">. <\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"3,14\"><span class=\"citation-0\">In addition, technological innovations \u2013 from organizational apps to robotics based on Japanese models \u2013 as well as new social concepts such as digital neighborhood assistance could contribute to easing the burden.<\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"3,16\">. In the long term, caregiving must be transformed from an individual burden into a recognized social service.<\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Caring for relatives often goes unnoticed, but is increasingly becoming a pillar of our social system. In light of demographic change, the urgent question arises as to how this service can be recognized and supported through new models in the
