Excessive ambition is disruptive in leisure time.
The new "leisure personality" is cheerful, tolerant, and sociable.
A zest for life and cheerfulness, tolerance and sociability are important qualities that make others likeable partners in daily life. According to a representative survey of 400 working professionals conducted by the BAT Leisure Research Institute, a new leisure personality is emerging alongside the work personality—one that knows how to live life to the fullest, makes good use of its free time, and cultivates relationships.
Apparently, leisure time offers more and more opportunities to cultivate desired qualities such as cheerfulness, openness, and honesty. In contrast, traditional work ethic like ambition and the drive for achievement are perceived as downright "disruptive" during leisure time, sports, and games.
Hamburg-based leisure researchers predict a shift in the perception of prestige in the future. Social recognition will no longer be solely earned through one's profession ("What is your job?" – "How much do you earn?"). Rather, leisure status will become a measure of social standing ("What are your leisure hobbies?"). Those who pursue diverse leisure interests that are as fulfilling as their jobs will not only find enjoyment in their free time and greater life satisfaction, but will also find fulfillment in their work.
