How will we live in the future? Or to put it another way, how do we actually want to live in the future? How do we want to travel, live, shop or work? What are we afraid of and what do we dream of?

In the future podcast "How Germany ticks", representative results from the Foundation for Future Studies' almost 50 years of research are presented, analysed and discussed on a weekly basis. And, of course, a forecast for the future is also given!

Ayaan Güls, Press Officer of the Foundation for Future Studies, and Ulrich Reinhardt, Scientific Director of the Foundation and professor in Germany and the USA, always look ahead with confidence and optimism and encourage people to look to the future.

    Podcast, Season 2 - Episode 09

    00:36 - Welcome/Topic introduction

01:00 – Sind „Bad News“ wirklich „Good News“?

    Podcast, Season 2 - Episode 08

    00:36 - Welcome/Topic introduction

01:00 - Optimism and confidence - the Germans' goals for the new year: New Year's resolutions are a popular tradition in Germany - but what are people's resolutions for 2023? This is exactly what we analysed in our year-end survey and came up with some positive results. Almost three quarters are planning to think and act more optimistically. But why do people long for more confidence and what are other goals of German citizens for the new year?

09:20 - Winter holiday: Ski holidays - yes or no? Has classic winter tourism had its day? This press enquiry from Austria reached us a few days ago. How popular are holidays in the cold season and where do Germans tend to go in winter: to the snow-covered mountains or increasingly to the sunny sandy beach?

20:50 - The future of 3D printing: Finally, in our topic of the week, we talk about the future of 3D printing. For over 30 years now, this process has been used to produce small parts or other everyday objects. But what about food or even human organs? How advanced is this technology today - and how far can it go?

30:20 - What comes, what stays, what goes?

Look forward to another exciting episode full of insights into our research. We look forward to seeing you and wish you all a Happy New Year 2023!

    Podcast, Season 2 - Episode 07

    00:36 - Welcome/Topic introduction

01:10 - Citizens want an end to constant optimisation: Google has more than 35 million entries on the topic of "optimise your life" - from nutrition and health to work, relationship and leisure tips. However, more than two thirds of Germans now take a critical view of the trend towards continuously optimising their own lives. So will the optimisation craze soon come to an end?

14:15 - The future of the churches: Our enquiry this week is about faith, God and the church: in addition to taking stock of attendance figures in places of worship, the focus is on the question of what German citizens expect, what developments are emerging and what the future of the church - between community and mediator of values - could look like.

24:00 - Contemplation at Christmas: In keeping with the run-up to Christmas, our topic of the week is all about the festival of love. Family, tradition and bright-eyed children, or rather kitsch, commerce and stress - what do Germans really associate with Christmas?

34:20 - What comes, what stays, what goes?

    Podcast, Season 2 - Episode 06

    00:36 - Welcome/Topic introduction

01:00 - One in four Germans works in their free time: More and more Germans are going to work regularly in their free time. Is this always voluntary or is it increasingly simply necessary? Find out in our podcast about the reasons for this and the favourite side jobs between waitressing, dog-sitting and online trading.

08:40 - Cruises: We received not one but two enquiries about cruises at the Foundation this week. How will the cruise market develop in the future and for whom is travelling on the ocean liner an option? We provide answers to the question of why more and more guests are travelling on board floating hotels and why the industry continues to grow in popularity despite the potential for improvement in terms of the environment.

19:40 - Dreams of old age: Finally, you can look forward to our topic of the week: What do Germans dream of in old age? Our society is getting older and older - but is this also changing our wishes for the future? Find out now.

25:55 - What comes, what stays, what goes?

    Podcast, Season 2 - Episode 05

    00:36 - Welcome/Topic introduction

01:00 - Can we trust each other? For the first time in 20 years, German citizens' trust in each other has fallen significantly. More than half mistrust their fellow citizens. What are the reasons for these significant changes? In this episode, find out what role institutions, the pandemic and our own self-confidence in our intuition and our decisions play in this. Do we ultimately have to learn to trust again?

11:35 - Transparent companies: Today, every action taken by companies is increasingly in the public eye. A look behind the scenes - more and more customers are now demanding this. But what impact will this have on the actions, reputation and success of companies in the future? What is of decisive importance for the customer in the end?

17:20 - Organic is booming: But is that really the case? Find out why many Germans today attach much greater importance to regionality and seasonality of products than the countless seals on the growing number of organic products in the supermarket.

25:55 - What comes, what stays, what goes?
