Tropical park in the morning and Disneyland in the afternoon?

The holiday world of tomorrow from the perspective of German citizens

„A mixture of marina, tropical garden, shopping centre and Greek village“ - this is how more than five million German citizens in the West and East imagine their holiday paradise of the future. This is the result of a representative survey conducted by the BAT Leisure Research Institute, in which 3,000 German citizens aged 14 and over in the old and new federal states were asked about their holiday wishes.
As fantastic as these holiday dreams may sound, they are quite realistic. The holiday world of tomorrow is already being created today: Disneyland or tropical parks are perfect artificial worlds with all the comforts. And for almost three million Germans, a nearby subtropical bathing paradise under glass is a real alternative to the classic seaside holiday. „The holiday world of tomorrow is a realised vision and not an illusion,“ says Prof. Dr Horst W. Opaschowski, Director of the BAT Institute. „Illusions can be destroyed, visions never can.“ The holiday world of tomorrow does not want to be a reflection of social reality. Rather, it will realise what people imagine in their fantasies and dreams.
And yet the dream of travelling for real will continue to exist. The triad „exotic, tropical, Caribbean“ describes the ideas of faraway paradisiacal holiday destinations that two million West Germans and 1.5 million East Germans would like to see. A further four million Germans associate a holiday trip with a longing for the ultimate adventure: safaris or trekking tours to undeveloped regions. Even the classic study trip has a future and is becoming a cult tour for more than three million Germans.
Despite these forward-looking trends, one thing remains clear: According to the findings of the BAT Institute, the old holiday worlds will also be the new ones for the majority of Germans. Most people want to continue holidaying „as before“ in the future and one in four Germans want to keep everything the same: enjoying the beach, sun and sea, lazing in a deckchair, strolling around and enjoying a nice meal.
