Result

Almost one in two Germans regularly pursues a personal hobby in their free time - i.e. at least once a week. Five years ago, only just under one in three made time for an individual hobby. The increased interest in this particular leisure activity is also reflected in the question of whether Germans have rediscovered an old hobby for themselves. Since the outbreak of the pandemic, around one in ten Germans have returned to an old passion and spend their free time playing a musical instrument, doing handicrafts, puzzles, painting or DIY, for example.

Reasons

The increased frequency with which people are pursuing a special hobby can be attributed to various reasons. The coronavirus pandemic has had a strong influence on the rediscovery of an old hobby. The restrictions and lockdowns have prompted many people to spend more time within their own four walls. This has created a need for meaningful and active leisure activities. The search for creative activities and opportunities for self-realisation has thus become an important part of the lives of many Germans.

Another reason for the increased passion for the hobby is the growing stress in society. Professional demands, personal obligations and social expectations often lead to a hectic lifestyle and inner turmoil. Pursuing a hobby can help to reduce this stress and provide balance. By focussing on a specific activity, you can clear your head and recharge your batteries. Whether painting, gardening, making music or playing sport - hobbies offer the opportunity to escape the stress of everyday life and devote yourself entirely to your own well-being.

Forecast

The increasing number of citizens who regularly dedicate themselves to a hobby illustrates the importance of a counterbalance to the hectic, digitalised and optimisation-focused lifestyle. Hobbies are not only entertaining, but also promote creativity, boost self-confidence and contribute to personal development. In addition, hobbies often help to establish social contacts and strengthen a sense of community. In a time characterised by uncertainty and change, hobbies offer a stable anchor.

Accordingly, the importance of hobbies will continue to grow in the future. More and more people will recognise the positive impact that regularly pursuing a personal hobby can have on their lives. It is time to give personal hobbies the status they deserve - as an important part of a balanced and fulfilling life.
