Amusement and theme parks are extremely popular in Germany: 38 percent of the population take advantage of the opportunity to ride a roller coaster, see a show, or experience another attraction at one of the numerous parks at least once a year. Interest varies depending on life stage: Parents with their children are the most frequent visitors, followed by young adults. Childless couples and singles aged 25-49 visit the parks somewhat less often. Among young seniors, roughly one in four still visits, while only one in seven retirees opts for a visit.

Reasons

Germans are enthusiastic about visiting amusement parks for a variety of reasons. Young adults particularly appreciate the thrill of the rides and the shared experience with friends. Singles and middle-aged couples often seek a change of pace and a break from everyday life. For parents, amusement parks are a family-friendly activity that creates shared memories and is especially fun for children. Older people also enjoy amusement parks, but often prefer other leisure activities and feel that the offerings aren't really for them.

Forecast

The future of theme park visits is marked by both challenges and opportunities. For young adults and parents in particular, a trip to a theme park remains an essential annual highlight. However, given the rising average age in Germany and the simultaneously declining birth rate, theme parks must continue to attract broader segments of the population with innovations and new offerings. Operators should therefore specifically address the needs of singles, childless couples, and older generations. Technological innovations such as virtual reality attractions will complement existing offerings and simultaneously reduce waiting times. Crucially, however, the shared experience with other visitors, the creation of unforgettable moments with family and friends, and the provision of a contrast to everyday (digital) life will remain essential.
