Result

On average, one in seven German citizens currently goes to the cinema at least once a month - more than before the pandemic. In large cities, more than one in five people are once again being drawn to the cinema, whereas this leisure activity is much less common in rural areas.
Film screenings are particularly popular with the younger generation: one in four of them regularly go to the cinema. In contrast, only seven per cent of the over 55s watch films on the big screen.

Reasons

Going to the cinema is usually a social experience. The opportunity to watch a film at the cinema with friends or family is appreciated by many people, as it offers an opportunity to escape from everyday life and immerse yourself in another world - with popcorn or a glass of wine, depending on your preference. The atmosphere, comfortable seats, better picture and sound quality than in your own living room and, of course, the opportunity to watch the latest blockbuster films on the big screen are all appreciated. In addition, a kind of streaming fatigue also plays a role for some visitors. During all the restrictions in the pandemic, numerous series and films were watched at home - now many are longing for new entertainment options and are giving the cinema a comeback.
The more intensive use by city dwellers can be explained by the wider range of multiplexes and arthouse cinemas, as well as better accessibility by public transport. One important reason why more young people are going to the cinema is the film industry's focus on this target group. Particularly in the areas of science fiction, fantasy and superhero films, many new releases are characterised by elaborate production with well-known actors, which are heavily advertised on social media channels and inspire many younger people.

Forecast

On the one hand, watching the latest Hollywood film in the cinema remains a special experience. Younger cineastes in particular appreciate innovative and new technologies that allow the audience to almost become part of the film. There is potential here in the further development of 3D to 4D, or the integration of virtual or augmented reality.
On the other hand, the cinema experience is becoming more important than the film itself for many older cinema-goers. They want to spend their leisure time with friends in a pleasant atmosphere and at the same time experience something special while consuming passively. Service will play a special role here: Whether cloakroom and parking facilities, an aperitif or a cup of coffee at the bar beforehand, service at the seat or the opportunity to talk about what they have seen in peace afterwards - the cinema must offer them more than just the film itself, otherwise they will wait until they can watch the film at home on the sofa.
