Result

Two thirds of the population regularly cook or bake something in their own kitchen in their free time. There are only slight differences in age, whereas women are even more active. However, more than half of all men have now also discovered this leisure activity for themselves. A cross between age and gender also shows that the younger the men, the more they cook/bake, whereas the opposite is true for women.

Reasons

There are numerous reasons why cooking and baking have become such popular leisure activities. Firstly, they are seen as relaxing and creative activities. Many people enjoy trying out new recipes and improving their culinary skills. On the other hand, this leisure activity also provides a contrast to the stress of everyday life. True to the motto: „Good things take time“, people take their time to dedicate themselves to this activity, little things can take their time and the hectic pace of the rest of the day is quickly forgotten. Quality and sustainability are also becoming increasingly important. Preparing your own meals allows you to better control your own diet and eat healthier and more balanced meals. The presence of cookery shows on television and the numerous opportunities to find out about recipes, tips and ideas online certainly play an additional role.

Forecast

More and more people are using delivery services, lunch options or existing university, school and work canteens to consume their daily meals quickly and easily. At the same time, there is also a growing desire to prepare meals at home at the weekend or one day a week. The focus here is not only on the special meal, the delicious cake or the new dish, but also on the preparation itself. Preparing something, whether alone or together with friends, children or neighbours, is a leisure activity that many people want to continue doing in the future - provided they take the time to do so.
