Festive desire to travel is limited

More visits to relatives than holiday trips

13.5 million Germans want to travel over Christmas and New Year. While 4.8 million (10 %) can afford a holiday trip, almost twice as many use the holidays to visit relatives. This is the result of a recent representative survey conducted by the BAT Leisure Research Institute, in which 2,000 people aged 14 and over were asked about their travel intentions over the festive period.

Christmas holidays are popular, but very few people want to miss out on spending Christmas time at home. Only 2 per cent of those surveyed decided to take a two-week holiday trip over the festive period. Self-employed people and freelancers make the most use of this option. 5 per cent are content with a two- to four-day short trip and a further 3 per cent choose a trip lasting five to 13 days.

8.7 million Germans (18 %) plan to use the time between the public holidays to visit relatives for several days. There are two groups in particular who escape their own four walls and „nest“ with relatives: singles and couples without children. They are looking to recharge their batteries in their parents' home or want to enjoy the Christmas atmosphere where it is at its best - with their family.
