Result

Almost half of Germans (49%) report being more dependent on paid leisure activities than they would like. This finding illustrates that the financial aspect plays an increasingly significant role in leisure activities and represents a tension between desires and possibilities for many. Striking differences exist between age groups: while 60% of those under 30 agree with this statement, the figure is 49% for those aged 30 to 64 and only 39% for those over 65. These differences demonstrate that younger people, in particular, orient their leisure activities more towards paid options and rely less on free alternatives.

Reasons

Several factors contribute to this trend. Younger people under 30 often place great value on experiences and social activities that frequently involve costs, such as going to the cinema, concerts, or restaurants. Increased digital connectivity also plays a role, as it makes them more aware of paid services, whether through social media or personalized advertising. The 30-64 age group is generally under greater financial strain; while they still engage in paid activities, they manage their budgets more consciously. Older people over 65, on the other hand, more frequently opt for free alternatives, as they often have more time and fewer obligations, thus prioritizing their leisure time differently.

Forecast

This trend could intensify in the coming years, especially if economic conditions—such as inflation or higher energy costs—further strain household budgets. The younger generation, in particular, will face the challenge of balancing their desire for experiences with their financial means. Providers of paid leisure activities could increasingly rely on discounts, subscriptions, or flexible pricing models to attract people despite financial constraints. At the same time, it is more important than ever at the societal level to expand and promote free leisure opportunities such as public parks, libraries, and cultural events. This is especially true for older people and lower-income households, to ensure that everyone, regardless of their financial situation, has access to balanced and fulfilling leisure activities.
