Germans are gripped by wanderlust: Over 21 million German citizens plan to embark on a major trip in 1985.
45 percent of German citizens aged 14 and over plan to travel for "at least two weeks" in 1985. That's over 21 million people who intend to travel by car, train, bus, or plane that year. In a representative survey conducted in mid-January 1985, the BAT Leisure Research Institute interviewed 2,000 people aged 14 and over in West Germany and West Berlin about their vacation plans for 1985: Almost half of all German citizens are planning an extended vacation. Another 25 percent are "still undecided" or "don't know yet." Only 28 percent of those surveyed plan to forgo an extended vacation. Professor Dr. Horst W. Opaschowski, Scientific Director of the BAT Leisure Research Institute: „The tight budgets of German citizens have resulted in two lean years for the travel industry. Nevertheless, the German people's desire to travel has not diminished. Three-quarters of holidaymakers cannot finance their trips from their current income – they have to save. Savings accounts and holiday funds are making the travel dreams of many Germans a reality again in 1985. For many, a missed holiday feels like a missed opportunity in life.“.
