The desire to go on holiday is and remains the highlight of the year for Germans - regardless of where they live or what their family situation is like. However, holiday spending differs significantly. City dwellers spend around 50 per cent more money on holidays than rural dwellers and childless couples and parents spend around 400 euros more per person than singles.
Reasons
Singles are not tied to holiday periods and can act more flexibly to take advantage of cheaper offers (e.g. last minute). Singles also often spend less money on typical couple and family activities such as visits to restaurants or theme parks and are often more willing to compromise on accommodation, while couples or families are looking for more comfort and amenities and spend more money on them. Many single people also have a lower holiday budget as their everyday expenses are higher and they pay more tax.
City dwellers often spend an above-average amount of money on holiday, as they have a higher wage level, fly more often and travel longer.
Forecast
The current differences between singles and couples or parents will not change significantly in the future - the reasons mentioned are too serious for this. It is more likely that there will be a levelling out of the place of residence. Some higher earners are already moving out of the city, as they are increasingly looking for more nature and can work from anywhere thanks to remote jobs.
