Result

The call for more cohesion in society is becoming increasingly clear. For example, 89 out of 100 respondents believe that there is less and less room for selfishness in our society and that greater cohesion is needed. Compared to 2016, when 86 per cent were already of this opinion, the desire for solidarity has intensified further. Agreement is particularly high among the over 65s: In this age group, 95 out of 100 respondents agreed with the statement.

Reasons

Global uncertainties such as geopolitical tensions and economic crises have significantly increased the need for stability and collective solutions. Many people are increasingly recognising the importance of mutual support, especially older people who are often dependent on help.

At the same time, increasing political polarisation and social division are fuelling the desire for unity. In a world that appears to be increasingly characterised by individualisation and self-interest, many people have a growing desire for community and mutual consideration. Social media also plays a central role in this: platforms such as X (formerly Twitter) often reinforce existing perceptions through filter bubbles, promote extreme positions and thus contribute to social division.

Forecast

The longing for community will continue to increase as a result of wars, crises and conflicts as well as advancing digitalisation. The more trust in institutions such as politics, the church, the media and the economy dwindles, the closer people come together and seek support and a sense of belonging in their immediate surroundings.

One possible alternative to this "renaissance of the community" would be increasing social fragmentation. However, this development would lead to growing tensions - a scenario that most people reject. In order to promote positive development, each individual needs to be actively involved. Solidarity and mutual support must be consciously practised - in the family and among friends, in the neighbourhood and in clubs, at work and in leisure time. This is the only way to create harmonious coexistence.
